Gua Sha Massage

Eases pain and stiffness, effective in chronic and acute internal disorders

Gua Sha

Gua Sha, called also scraping massage, is a healing massage therapy that uses a smooth edged tool to repeatedly scrape an area of lubricated skin.

The goal is to intentionally create transitory therapeutic petechiae called ‘sha’. The sha represents leakage of the blood in the subcutaneous tissue (beneath the skin). Raising sha opens pores, improves blood flow and removes blood stagnation.

A single gua sha treatment can lead to an immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, cough or nausea. It works well for acute and chronic organ disorders.

The description of Gua Sha as a scrapping massage does not sound exciting, perhaps, but the experience is in fact liberating. Gua sha acts deeper than the cupping or cupping massage does, and the freedom of movement that follows a treatment is simply great.

I use dedicated Gua Sha tools, made either from jade or buffalo horn:

Please be aware that the Sha appear like bruising and will resolve within a week time.

Swimming or exposure to wind and cold is contraindicated after the treatment.

Arya Nielsen, PhD, wrote a scientific book on the incredible benefits of this massage: Gua sha: A Traditional Technique for Modern Practice. A few articles to study are available on PubMed.
