Tuina

Powerful massage to address problems in the Body and Mind

Tuina Massage

Tui Na or Tuina, (pronounced “twey na”) is a Chinese medical massage, which relies on:

  • deep tissue massage,
  • acupressure,
  • assisted stretching and
  • careful joint manipulations.

Firstly, Tuina uses a variety of techniques to release tension in the muscles and improve the free flow of blood and lymph. Secondly, it uses acupressure, as well as assisted manipulations (similar to the ones in physiotherapy and osteopathy) to remove blockages along the sheaths of connective tissues.

As a result, Tuina improves both the mental and physical aspects – the Body and Mind.

Benefits of Tuina

Tuina can be safely applied to babies, children and most adults. There are both gentle and vigorous variations possible within the treatment that make Tui Na versatile.

Tuina offers a gentle approach when applied to babies and small children. It can help with the majority of childhood aliments, such as colic, constipation, weak immunity,  tantrums, restlessness, lack of internal strength, ADD/ADHD, or learning difficulty.

Children respond greatly to Tui na, but they require the loving touch of their parents as well. My goal is to teach the parents a few techniques that can be followed at home, alongside the treatment course.

I am especially interested to treat children with various spectrum of Asberger syndrome, autism or learning difficulty. Tui Na is a very promising healing modality for them.

Treatment

During the treatment you will stay in your clothes and either lie down on a massage table or be seated. Then you will be covered with a cotton sheet which facilitates the smoothness of the techniques used.

It is necessary to come in soft, loose clothing as otherwise the applied techniques will loose their practicability and assisted stretching will become impossible. Please wear a top that can be rolled up to the ribs, as I may need tow rok on your abdomen.

Please wear no jeans and no skirts/dresses.

The treatment does not generally include the whole body massage but focuses on the problematic area and the related parts (e.g. upper body, hands and feet).

If necessary, a special Chinese ointment will be rubbed into the body area to assist a deep muscle work.  Also, a massage oil may be used on neck, hands and feet to facilitate the movement.

Appointments

Appointments last 45min for kids and 1h for adults, usually combined with elements of gua-sha or cupping.

Please allow additional 20-30min for the initial consultation.

Health Concerns

Tui Na can help with the majority of health concerns, both acute or chronic. Examples include:

  • Migraines and headaches
  • Neck or Shoulder pain
  • Upper/low back pain
  • Sciatica or weak legs
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Rheumatism
  • Stress and fatigue
  • Digestive disorders
  • Hypertension
  • Fertility
  • Sport injuries
  • Weak immunity
  • Anxiety and restlessness
  • Sadness, depression
  • Anger and bad temper
  • Poor breathing and so on.

Response to Treatment

The response to treatment varies. Some people experience a good improvement after the first treatment, while others may need  more sessions. In general, acute conditions may be resolved in as little as 2 or 3 treatments. Chronic conditions often need more sessions, usually combined with acupuncture, before a good progress is experienced.

Usually, one treatment per week is recommended for the first 3 or 4 weeks.

The use of a holistic approach enables a treatment of the whole person. Most people find unexpected benefits above and far beyond their initial reason for seeking treatment. Examples include improved sleep and digestion, improved mental clarity; improved energy, inner balance and the sense of well-being.

You are welcome to come for one off treatment to find out how you like it.

Experience the change initatied by tuina – the medical massage.
